Joshua Reynolds war neben William Hogarth und Thomas Gainsborough der bekannteste und durch sein künstlerisches und kunsttheoretisches Wirken der einflussreichste englische Maler des 18. Jahrhunderts. Er wird zur „English school“ des 18./19. Jahrhunderts gezählt. Größten Ruhm erntete er als Porträtmaler. Das Papier ist stellenweise leicht knittrig. Die Darstellung macht einen sehr guten Eindruck. Im oberen Bereich der Darstellung waagerechte Knickspur mit verso hinterlegten Einrissen. Unterlage mit Spuren einer früheren Montage.
