Alfred Rethel war ein deutscher Historienmaler der Spätromantik; Künstlerische Ausbildung an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, wo ihn sein Lehrer Wilhelm Schadow an den Stil der Nazarener heranführte.

- Zustand: Akzeptabler Zustand. Die Darstellung macht einen sehr guten Eindruck. Das Blatt hat sich altersbedingt verfärbt, Stockflecken haben sich über den Randbereich verteilt, die Darstellung ist nur vereinzelt stockfleckig; entlang der Blattkanten sind Knickspuren festzustellen.

- Inscription: Signed and titled on the right below the image in the printing plate: “after a hand drawing by A.Rethel rad. by X Steifensand / Daniel in the Lion’s Den”. Alfred Rethel was a German history painter of the late Romantic period; artistic training at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where his teacher Wilhelm Schadow introduced him to the Nazarene style.

- Condition: Rather good condition. The image makes a very good impression. The sheet has discoloured due to its age, foxing has spread over the margins, the illustration is only sporadically foxed; there are traces of creasing along the edges of the sheet.
