Das Blatt stammt aus Johann Caspar Lavaters Physiognomische Fragmente, zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntniß und Menschenliebe. Zwischen 1775 und 1778 gab er das mehrbändige Werk heraus, in dem menschliche Charaktere anhand ihrer Physiognomie erklärt werden. Bekannte Künstler wie Daniel Chodowiecki, Johann Rudolph Schellenberg oder Johann Heinrich Lips lieferten Vorlagen für seine Sammlung der Physiognomik, die zahlreiche Porträts bekannter und anonymer Personen enthält.

Between 1775 and 1778, he published the multi-volume work in which human characters are explained on the basis of their physiognomy.
