Lord Maitland of Thirlestane (1537-1595), Lord Chancellor of Scotland von 1587-1595, Leitender Berater von König James VI (später James I von Großbritannien und Irland); sein Vater war der Dichter und Staatsmann Sir Richard Maitland von Lethington; sein Bruder, William Maitland, war ein bedeutender Unterstützer von Maria Stuart, Königin von Schottland (1542-67). Leicht nach rechts gedreht blickt er den Betrachter an und trägt ein schön verziertes Wams sowie einen mit Spitze umrandeten Kragen.

Half-length portrait of John, 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane (1537-1595), Lord Chancellor of Scotland from 1587-1595, Senior Advisor to King James VI (later James I of Great Britain and Ireland); his father was the poet and statesman Sir Richard Maitland of Lethington; his brother, William Maitland, was a prominent supporter of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots (1542-67). Turned slightly to the right, he faces the viewer and wears a beautifully decorated doublet and a collar edged with lace.
