- Beschreibung: Brustbild im Profil der beiden Hauptfiguren des Romans, der alte Doktor Pascal mit struppigem Bart und Hut neben seiner jungen schönen Nichte Clotilde, mit der er ein Liebesverhältnis beginnt. Der Roman bildet den letzten Band des Rougon-Macquart-Zyklus und thematisiert den Konflikt zwischen Wissenschaft und Religion im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert. Die Illustration stammt aus dem Nachlass des Künstlers, Illustrators und Kostümzeichners Erhard Klepper und gehört zu einer ganzen Serie von Romanillustrationen.
