      Schweizer Theologe, Philosoph und Schriftsteller der Aufklärung. Bekannt für sein Werk zur Physiognomik “Physiognomischen Fragmente, zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntniß und Menschenliebe”, wonach er erklärt, dass Charakterzüge des Menschen sich in Profil und Physiognomie widerspiegeln. Bekannte Künstler wie Daniel Chodowiecki, Johann Rudolph Schellenberg oder Johann Heinrich Lips lieferten Vorlagen für seine Sammlung der Physiognomik, die zahlreiche Porträts bekannter und anonymer Personen enthält.

Known for his work on physiognomy “Physiognomische Fragmente, zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntniß und Menschenliebe” (Physiognomic Fragments, for the Promotion of Human Knowledge and Human Love), according to which he explains that human character traits are reflected in profile and physiognomy.
