Über die Künstlerin:
Die Künstlerin Olga Potthast von Minden, in Varel geboren und Tochter einer Beamtenfamilie begann als Portraitmalerin und ließ sich in Berlin vom berühmten Maler Anton von Werner unterrichten. Später wurde sie eine Schülerin von Julius Preller (1834 bis 1914), ein Vareler Maler, zuvor Direktor des Eisenwerks Varel. Von Preller inspiriert widmete sie sich der Landschaftsmalerei und unternahm Studienreisen in die Lüneburger Heide, in die Vogesen, die Eifel, als auch auf Inseln der Nord- und Ostsee. Die hier angebotenen Werke zeigen naturalistische Heimatlandschaften, die durch den pastosen Pinselauftrag eine impressionistische Prägung erhalten. Wir sehen bunte Himmelslandschaften, sonnenbeschienene Wiesen oder Wellen, die an Klippen brechen. Sie kommen ohne Personenstaffage aus und erscheinen dennoch nicht leer oder abweisend, sondern ruhevoll und verträumt. Trotz der naturalistischen Wiedergabe erhalten die Bilder durch die Lichtführung und das Farbspiel einen poetischen Inhalt. Die Qualität der Arbeiten ist besonders hoch und steht der Qualität von Julius Preller in nichts nach.
Die Arbeit stammt aus dem Nachlass der Künstlerin. - Datierung: um 1900

About the artist:
The artist Olga Potthast von Minden, born in Varel and daughter of a civil servant family, began as a portrait painter and was taught in Berlin by the famous painter Anton von Werner. Later she became a pupil of Julius Preller (1834 to 1914), a Varel painter, previously director of the Varel ironworks. Inspired by Preller, she devoted herself to landscape painting and undertook study trips to the Lüneburg Heath, the Vosges, the Eifel, as well as to islands on the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The works offered here show naturalistic landscapes of the homeland, which are given an impressionistic character by the impasto brush application. We see colourful skyscapes, sunlit meadows or waves breaking on cliffs. They get by without a staffage of people and yet do not appear empty or forbidding, but calm and dreamy. Despite the naturalistic rendering, the pictures take on a poetic content through the use of light and the play of colour. The quality of the works is particularly high and is in no way inferior to the quality of Julius Preller.
